Two Versatile Long Narrow Wall Art Paintings
Add & Subtract 1 & 2
The two long narrow wall art paintings above are part of my painting series EXPLORING SPACE.
These paintings are each 6 feet long by only 9 inches wide. They create sophisticated impact in real life because of their custom 3 inch depth.
The painting on the bottom of the photo above has just been sold. But the second painting ADD & SUBTRACT is still available.
Long Narrow Vertical Wall Art - or Long Narrow Horizontal Wall Art ??? Your choice !
How were these two long narrow wall art paintings created?
The long and narrow dimensions of these paintings presented a bit of a design challenge. I had never tried this unusual format before and it was exciting to see what would come of it.
The design and composition of any painting needs to be balanced, so one side doesn’t look heavier than the other.
Yet at the same time, to be interesting, it needs to be dynamic and move your eye around. In this case, the challenge was to move the eye from one side to the other.
Layered texture and colour have always been my passion from the beginning.
Creatively, my intention with these long and narrow wall art paintings, was to create as much textural variety as possible while exploring their unique formats.
The Process
Just like most of my paintings, I began with priming and painting the surface, which in this case was black, I then collaged a variety of hand-painted papers.
After the initial layers, I generally react to what I see in front of me taking each next step intuitively.
I then began to ADD & SUBTRACT (hence the title) paint layers over top, marks, drawings and more collage, I even scratched through to reveal layers underneath.
These four detail shots give you a better idea of the intricate layers of colour and texture I enjoy creating.
This back and forth process of adding and subtracting continues for quite some time until I finish.
When is it finished?
The painting is finished when the composition comes together in a way that feels exciting, balanced and satisfying. It’s finished when it catches the eye from a distance and becomes even more interesting up close.
Side & Back View
These are extra deep at 3 inches, with ready to hang D-rings. for a simple flush-to-wall installation.
By the way, my gallery wrapped stretched canvases and cradled wood panels are always of the highest quality.
I use only professional quality acrylic paint and materials that are 100% archival to create my art. Every painting is finished with special acrylic varnish to protect it from dust and UV light.
This professional grade varnish means hanging near a window is totally ok!
